An entire family of fearful oiks fetches up at Waterloo Road comprehensive school, now repaired and re-opened after the unfortunate fire that nearly destroyed it at the end of the last series of this soapy drama. But painfully compassionate - indeed, sensationally gullible and naive - head teacher Rachel Mason (Eva Pope) knows that kids aren't bad, they just need understanding. So she takes in this group of almost Dickensian ruffians, leaving their comically drunken mother to resume her relationship with the bottle. And then the problems start. One of the family, troubled young Earl, has a gun, and he's not afraid to wave it around. Maybe if he just read poems sensitively in class like his older brother, he'd be all right. But it will take more than a love of sonnets to set Earl (an impressive Reece Noi, from Grange Hill) on the right path. RT reviewer - Alison Graham

Documentary series about the development of some of Britain's biggest movies. In 1974, the Monty Python team, buoyed by the success of their television series, decided to try their hand at making a feature film. The result, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, has become a cult classic and has even inspired a West End musical. John Cleese, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam and others involved in the production explain how this came about despite a series of disasters befalling the project.
Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez are reteamed for this sequel to the box-office smash Stakeout, released six years earlier, but here the chemistry is missing. Once again the two bickering cops find themselves on surveillance duty, this time watching over a potential witness in a Mob trial, played by Raging Bull's Cathy Moriarty, and with feisty assistant DA Rosie O'Donnell along for the ride. The comic playing between the three leads can't be faulted, and there's even a brief appearance by Dreyfuss's love interest from the original, Madeleine Stowe, but director John Badham can't bring anything new to a winning formula.

I suppose Rick Stein is allowed a little self-indulgence after his successful fish restaurant and TV career. But not this much, surely - 90 whole minutes devoted to his brilliance, his friends and his now-deceased dog. We hear about Stein's 1970s disco in his beloved Padstow in Cornwall, later closed because the police objected to the number of fights on the premises, to his chef training and his current domination of all things fishy. There's some pleasantly escapist stuff, notably lush clips from his TV series down the years - rolling waves, gorgeous Cornish beaches, al fresco cooking - and it's all very easy on the eye and ear. The only sour, potentially interesting, note comes when Stein is confronted with the "Padstein" nickname routinely applied to Padstow, seat of his empire. It rankles: "I've just got a few modest businesses; I don't own the whole town," he insists. The show ends with Stein cooking dinner for friends and staff, and, finally, a saccharine tribute sung to Chalky, his departed doggy companion. RT reviewer - Alison Graham

In this impressive psychological western, Henry Fonda is on magnificent form as a former gunfighter, aching with regret for a passing age and a wasted life, whose success as a lawman means that his corrupt regime is tolerated by the locals. The gradual disintegration of Fonda's friendship with gambler Anthony Quinn is deftly handled by director Edward Dmytryk, allowing the stars' contrasting acting styles to define their characters. With Richard Widmark surprisingly restrained and glamour provided by Dorothy Malone, this deserves to be better known.

The episode was still a work in progress as we went to press, but we're promised a few fiery outbursts from Stephanie, a woman with high expectations and a disinclination to compromise. An all-female caving expedition goes horribly wrong in this brilliantly constructed panic attack from director Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers). Six friends end up in an uncharted subterranean system and encounter a monstrous cannibal race, but desperation, betrayals and imploding relationships prove as fatal to the girls as the flesh-eating threat. From the high-impact opening shock to the poignantly bleak ending, this underground Deliverance is designed to cause maximum stress in anyone remotely claustrophobic, vertiginous or afraid of the dark. Marshall's expert choreography of the creepy "crawler" creatures provides the extra terror, while they provide the full-on skin-slicing gore. As a writer and director he has a keen understanding of what makes the horror genre tick, and overturns the usual conventions with canny wit. Super-scary and vicious, both psychologically and physically, this cleverly produced chill-ride is edgy British horror at its very best.

Snipes stars as a Washington DC homicide detective who's called in to investigate a murder at the White House. As he delves deep into the crime with secret service agent Diane Lane he begins to uncover a conspiracy that may reach all the way to the president himself. Quentin Tarantino's vigorous assertion in Sleep with Me that this is the ultimate gay fantasy movie rather pulls the carpet from under the feet of those attempting to appraise this slavish tribute to flash fly boys and their hi-tech toys. There is no denying the quality and entertainment value of the flying sequences, which effortlessly blend mile-high footage with state-of-the-art modelwork, but the rivalry between Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer, and Cruise's tempestuous affair with Kelly McGillis, are pure bunk. Yet, with the shameful exception of McGillis, all emerged with reputations enhanced, particularly director Tony Scott, who takes all the credit for preventing this mindless macho daydream from nose-diving.
Steve is torn between Becky and Michelle. Joe's situation calls for desperate measures. Molly attempts to engineer Jackie's departure.
This bang-on-target satire of low-budget Hollywood film-making contains Steve Martin's best comic performance since Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Martin plays an ambitious but financially challenged director who's unable to sign up A-list action star Kit Ramsey (Eddie Murphy) for his new sci-fi project. So he follows the actor around, setting up various silly scenarios and filming Kit's shocked reactions to insert into his movie that features a lookalike (also played by Murphy). Martin - who also wrote the hilarious screenplay - and Murphy are immensely engaging, and there's sparkling support from Heather Graham as a talentless actress who's quite prepared to sleep her way to the top. While The Player was a snarling, sharp-toothed beast, director Frank Oz's fun send-up of Tinseltown is a cute and cuddly companion piece.

Shot in the untamed wilds of Pinewood Studios, the 11th Carry On finds the team in mid-season form. All the regulars impress, but Charles Hawtrey steals the picture as the firewater-swilling Chief Big Heap.

Although this Highland-set series outstayed its welcome, it started out as a fun fish-out-of-water drama. It's basically Ballykissangel in Scotland, peopled by a similar retinue of dotty oddballs and with an urban newcomer (in this case restaurateur Archie) struggling to make sense of it all. "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?". Alec Baldwin does, here playing both wealthy socialite Lamont Cranston and his mysterious alter ego, the Shadow, who uses psychic powers to render himself invisible at will. The famous 1930s pulp-fiction crime-fighter takes on a descendant of Genghis Khan who's out to conquer the world with a pre-Second World War nuclear device in Highlander director Russell Mulcahy's flight of comic-strip fantasy. It's stuffed with fun clichés of the genre, and the spectacle of the exquisite design easily matches the visual punch of the special effects. Unfortunately, the flashy production values rather overshadow the performances of Baldwin and the star-studded supporting cast, while the plot rarely grips.

This is the action thriller that minted Bruce Willis's career, launched a franchise and still stands as a giant of the genre. Recalling the disaster movies of the 1970s, it places a group of people in peril (office workers at a Christmas party in an otherwise empty Los Angeles skyscraper) when suave Alan Rickman and his Euro-terrorists take them hostage. One man (Willis, naturally) is charged with saving them.
