Tom and Jerry: the Movie

Having starred in 161 cartoons, won numerous Oscars and danced with Gene Kelly and Esther Williams, surely Tom and Jerry deserved more respect than this. Director Phil Roman and writer Dennis Marks should have Spike the bulldog set upon them for making the now-talking duo become friends in adversity - the whole point of those marvellous shorts was the comic mayhem, not the tacky bonhomie. But children who are not familiar with the original cartoons may find some enjoyment here - if they can get past the ghastly songs.

Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School

Scrappy-Doo must rank among the least-liked characters in cartoon history and his brash antics only exacerbate the failings of this desperately poor adventure. Ditching the majority of the Mystery Machine crew, the story sees Scooby and Shaggy become PE teachers at a finishing school for "ghouls", catering for the daughters of horror's most celebrated monsters. The blatant kidnap scheme of wicked witch Revolta means that there's virtually no case to be solved and, consequently, the action stumbles from one misjudged slapstick set-piece to another. Yet even the excruciating puns and the crass characterisations (including a pet dragon) pale into insignificance beside the abysmal Scrappy Rap.
